Hailing from the U.K., Darrell studied at Keele University (U.K.) and York University (Canada), specializing in vocal performance, conducting, and music education.

During his studies, Darrell was the recipient of the Mervin Taylor Prize, the Keele University Choral Conducting Scholarship, the Royal Dolton Scholarship, and most notably, Student of the Year (2010) for outstanding academic achievement and contribution to music education. He has had the opportunity to perform and teach in the U.K., France, and Australia, and currently resides in Ontario, Canada.

Darrell was the conductor of two mixed voice childrens' choirs, as well as guest conductor at Keele University's Bach Chorale and Philharmonic Orchestra & Choir for their 2010 Summer season.

Darrell's teaching has taken him to Australia, where he taught music at the Scots School, Albury, as part of an international exchange initiative providing vocal coaching and musical direction for instrumental ensembles and chamber choirs.

Darrell is excited to be with Cooke's-Portsmouth United Church and is pleased to be sharing the joy of music with the church and Kingston community.

Kate Van Allen

A graduate of Queen's University (B.Mus, B.Ed.), Kate was a school teacher and pianist in Kingston before moving to Ottawa in 1984. After 14 years of teaching piano and raising three daughters, she and her family returned to Kingston in 1998. Since that time, she has been keeping busy as a piano teacher, accompanist, and was previously the conductor of the Parr Christie Singers. She has also been involved in a number of musical theatre productions.

In addition, she has been substitute pianist at Cooke's-Portsmouth United Church for a few years, and is happy to be working in collaboration with the Music Director, Darrell, Rev. Nadene, and the many members of the CPUC Worship team.

Worship Choir

In late 2009, our new Worship Choir was formed. The Worship Choir is made up of approximately fifteen sopranos, altos, tenors, and basses. The Choir sings sacred music in a variety of styles, from classics by Handel to new pieces composed last week. The Choir participates in worship services at least twice a month.

New members are always welcome!

Special Music, Soloists

Our congregation is blessed with many wonderfully gifted musicians. A harpist, violinist, tuba player, bag piper, pianists, and oboist regularly participate in worship. If you would be willing to share your musical gifts in worship, please let Darrell Bryan know.
