Worship and Study at Cooke's-Portsmouth United Church

Five years ago a group of interested people gathered to explore the meaning and source of 'Celtic Spirituality'. It was a quest of sorts, a seeking to understand how one could live a spiritual life in an increasingly secular society. My personal journey seemed to be pulling me to ask questions about and come to grips with incarnational theology (Christ with us in the world). It has been a rewarding journey that continues. We have had people come and share their music, their thoughts, their culture and their insights.

When you walk into a house, a cathedral, some structure and look around at the symmetry, the proportions, the beauty ... you don't need to know the names of the architects or the contractors and craftspeople who built it with care and purpose, you know it was created. The world around us is like that, it holds the marvels of science, of beauty, of purpose .... and I don't have to tie myself in knots to  understand that it was created and the Creator is still about as a part of my life.

When Irish Catholics sit down with Scots Presbyterians and they both listen to the questions of a Buddhist, exciting things happen.

We have other things 'on the go' at Cooke's-Portsmouth now, but I have done services, led seminars, discussion groups and Celtic worship. If you'd like to dialogue, or would like to get a group together, here, there or in cyber space, let me know and let's see if something can't happen.     kchurch@kos.net

A Celtic Creed

( from "The Confession of St. Patrick trans. by Ludwig Bieler )

Because there is no other God, nor ever was, nor will be, then God the Father unbegotten, without beginning, from whom is all beginning, the Lord of the universe, as we have been taught; and His son Jesus Christ, whom we declare to have always been with the Father, spirituality and ineffably begotten by the Father before the beginning of the world, before all beginning; and by Him are made all things visible and invisible. He was made and, having defeated death, was received into heaven by the Father; and He hath given Him all power over all names in heaven, on earth, and under the earth, and every tongue shall confess to Him that Jesus Christ is Lord and God, in whom we believe, and whose advent we expect soon to be, judge of the living and of the dead, who will render to every man according to his deeds; and He has poured forth upon us abundantly the Holy Spirit, the gift and pledge of immortality, who makes those who believe and obey sons of God and joint heirs with Christ; and Him do we confess and adore, one God in the Trinity of the Holy Name.
